About Santorini....

Santorini is a volcanic island in the Cyclades group of the Greek islands. It is located between Ios and Anafi islands (North of Crete). It is famous for its dramatic views, stunning sunsets from Oia town, the strange white aubergine (eggplant), and of course Fava, the town of Fira, Oia and naturally its very own active volcano. The wine lovers will find the island also fascinating, having 13 official wineries. There are naturally fantastic beaches such as the beach of Perissa, maybe the best beach in Santorini, the black pebble beach of Kamari, white beach, and red beach.

Santorini was awarded by Global Traveler as the Best Island in Europe title for 2020 (the seventh consecutive year).

4. The catastrophic eruption in 1500BC, when the island was still rounded, gave today’s shape. Before the volcano eruption, an earthquake occurred. Scared inhabitants left the island just in time to avoid the worst. Researchers claim that the volcano’s eruption in the 17th century BC and its collapse 300-400 m below the surface of the sea level caused a gigantic tsunami wave up to 200 m high.

5. In Akrotiri was discovered the remains of a full Minoan town.

6. An advanced civilization lived on the island before the catastrophic eruption. It was one of the oldest civilizations of the Bronze Age (Minoan, Cretan culture) in the Mediterranean.

7. Santorini is an active volcano. The most recent eruption was in 1956 with tremors experienced between 2011 and 2012.

8. Part of the traditional buildings of Fira was destroyed during the earthquake in 1956.

9. Santorini may be Atlantis Plato wrote about.

10. There are over 80 grape varieties on the island. There is a tradition of winemaking for over 30 centuries. Nowadays there are 18 wineries producing wine, including the most famous one “Assyrtiko”.

11. The town of Oia is the most photographed place on the island. There you can find the church of St. Nicholas, patron of fishermen, and the famous windmill.
