Overview:The Historical Archive of Crete is housed in a beautiful neoclassical building. It is considered the most important archive after the General Archives of the State. It was founded in 1920 and includes a number of historical collections, the official correspondence of the Cretan Revolutions, old historical documents, and all kinds of objects related to the history of the island. It has a significant library with 6,500 volumes of books, among them rare books from the Byzantine, Venetian, and Turkish eras, a large press archive with almost all Cretan publications from 1831. Also in the same building, there is a museum, Historical and Folklore, with a large collection of relics of the history and wars of Crete. Eleftherios Venizelos’ personal belongings are exhibited in a special room. |
