“CRETAN HOUSE” – CHANIA FOLKLORE MUSEUM

It will give you a representative picture of the way of life that older people led in our island.

Two women – Mrs A. Bikaki and E. Koumandaraki-Markaki – worked hard for many years and “brought to life” today for you the old “Cretan House”.

 

The exhibition includes:

1. LAOGRAPHICAL COLLECTION

Laographical collection of tools, raw materials, and products of traditional domestic handicraft, various crafts, and agricultural life.

° Agricultural items for working in the fields like plows, scales, objects for crushing fruit…

° Bucolic objects like bells, shears…

° Domestic utensils object that every household had like a kneading-trough, lamps, dishes, objects used in baking, irons with coal.

° Weaving: raw materials, tools, and its products. Threads of silk, flax, athanatos, wool-reel, saber, loom-coverlets, towels, handkerchiefs, embroidery used in the bridal bed.

2. LAOGRAPHICAL PRESENTATIONS

Presentations of agricultural occupations. Ploughings, sowing, harvesting, threshing, crushing of the grapes.

Presentation of domestic handicrafts. Use of the loom-thread presentation, silk and flax processing, washing.

Presentation of various crafts like show-making, rope-making, tailoring, basket-making.

3. PRESENTATION OF THE INTERIOR OF AN AGRICULTURAL HOUSE

A kitchen with fireplace, a kiln, a sideboard.

A bedroom with a bridal bed embellished with a white mosquito-net and many embroideries.

In the workshop of the museum copies of old genuine embroidery are made and embroidered pictures with scenes of local manners and customs. They are “self-taught” designs full of motion and life showing the artistic creation and the effortless inspiration of their creator.
