Details / Information  Overview:

The museum is accommodated in the catholic of the Venetian abbey of Saint Francis. During the period of Ottoman occupation there use to exist a Muslim mosque of Yousuf Pasha. In the modern season had become a cinema and a storehouse for military purposes. Since 1963 it has been functioning as Archaeological Museum.

Apart from the permanent exhibition, the museum houses temporary exhibitions in the frame of certain local events (such as the exhibition of musical instruments or on the birth of writing), as well as music concerts.

In the collections, there are included: Minoan discoveries from various regions of the prefecture, prehistoric finds from caves, from graves of the Geometric period, the historical times from various cities of the prefecture. Coins, jewels (prehistoric and historical times), sculptures, inscriptions, stele, mosaics.

The most important exhibits of the museum are: Clay sealing from Kasteli, Clay tablet inscribed with signs of the Linear A script, Small clay tablets with texts in Linear B script, Clay bathtub used as a funerary sarcophagus, Clay pyxis with a representation of a kithara player, Cold disks from a female pithos burial, Head of a clay figurine from a female burial in a family rock-cut tomb, Clay figurine of a mourner from a subterranean rock-cut tomb, Mosaic floor decorated with a representation of Dionysos and Ariadne and Bust of the Roman emperor Hadrian.

The Special Ticket Package is valid for: the Archaeological Museum of Chania, the Byzantine and Post Byzantine Collection of Chania, the Archaeological Museum of Kissamos, and the Archaeological Site of Aptera.

Notes  Notes:

• Wheelchair ramps, but is a long way from parking facilities

• Small shop selling books

• The reduced fee is valid for all visitors from November 1st to March 31st

• Throughout the year, the following visitors are entitled to a reduced admission fee:

– University students and students at Technological Educational Institutes or equivalent schools from countries outside the EU, upon presentation of their student card.

– Greek and EU senior citizens over 65, upon presentation of their ID card or passport.

– Parents accompanying primary school children on educational visits.
